Beloved 1980s cartoon Robotech will return in 2017, as Titan Comics partners with Harmony Gold to revive the property with Briggs Land and DMZ writer Brian Wood anchoring the franchise.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to work with Brian to expand the Robotech universe, " Harmony Gold president of animation Tommy Yune said Thursday in a statement accompanying the announcement of Wood's involvement with the revival, adding, "His bold approach to storytelling is thoughtful and will be full of surprises for fans. "
Although Wood is primarily known for working on original concepts (His current Dark Horse series, Briggs Land, is in development for television at AMC), he has experience working on corporate properties, including runs on Marvel's X-Men and Moon Knight, as well as comic books based on Aliens and Star Wars.
The Titan series will be the latest in a line of comic book continuations of the cult animated series, which aired in the U. S. in 1985. The American Robotech was, essentially, a remix of three separate Japanese anime: 1982's Super Dimension Fortress Macross, 1983's Genesis Climber Mospeada and 1984's Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross.
A big-screen version of the property has been in the works at multiple studios for a number of years. The property currently is at Sony, with Aquaman helmer James Wan on board as director.
More details about the comic book series, including art team and launch date, is expected in the coming months.
